MOF Japanese Sweets & Coffee @ Pavilion Kuala Lumpur

There is a sweet tooth at home and it ain't me. Well maybe I am half a sweet tooth.

The sweet tooth is my younger brother. Often as we are about done with walking around Pavilion and heading to the car park, his eyes will glare at MOF, famous for their Hokkaido soft serve ice cream and their funky creations.

So more often than not, we will all hop in as the last stop and order a few to share.

The green tea ice cream is served with a chilled red bean soup, instead of paste. Either way, green tea and red beans were made for each other.

Their famous soft serve ice-cream with a strawberry topping. The fried pieces of sweet potato called "Imo" added the "hot" touch to the cold dessert.

The half sweet tooth wanted something to do with black sesame. So it was double up; fragrant black sesame ice cream and soft serve along with some rather unnecessary fruits.

Prices are not cheap as each dessert is around RM12-15. Then again nothing is cheap in Pavilion and at the end of the day a number is just a number, so long as you enjoy it.

Verdict: 3.5 stars out of 5 stars. Worth your sugar quota and you do feel kind of refreshed before you head home (especially with the kind of sun we are having the last two days).

South Seafood Restaurant @ Subang

Back in the days when the old Subang Airport was still in business and the restaurants surrounding it was booming like tomorrow, you would often find us as a family venturing to that area to look for good food.

The typical scenario would see us getting ready at 5pm to make the journey there so that we would be early enough to avoid the crowd. Never did occur to us that we could use the phone to call for a reservation. Then again, those were the days when bedtime was at 8pm.

Fast forward many years later, the Subang Airport was laid to rest in peace and "bought back from the dead", as you will find out, one or two restaurants are still doing very well.

One of them is the South Seafood Restaurant.

The name doesnt ring a bell? Remember the big signboard of an aging Hong Kong TVB drama star holding an enormous lobster? Well thats the ad for the restaurant. Along the way there, you can also refer to the ads for directions and to ensure you wont get lost.

When i first stepped in, i vaguely remembered coming here although i cant be for sure. That thought too was quickly put into my pockets when my eyes zoomed in at their seafood tanks.

Their range and quantity of seafood are impressive. Australian lobsters, Exotic fishes, prawns, crabs, abalones and lots more. Next imagine them in huge quantities i.e. fifty fishes in a huge tank or thirty red big australian lobsters staring at you. It is almost like an aquarium for a kid.

Enough about the aquarium and lets go to the food.


Clams in Superior stock (these are not your typical lala but are called "sha bak"), not as juicy as i thought it would be from my previous experience with these clams but the stock was well flavoured with chinese wine.

The Pak Cheok Prawns were good. Fresh prawns cooked in a very simple manner. They are meant to blanched and this was served with a broth similar to the clams.

Apparently their grilled bbq squid is their speciality. Tasted ordinary and more suited as a snack for beer.

A while ago, if i said the dish above was kai lan, you must be thinking what kind of funky chef created such a dish? Now, it is as common as any other vegetable dish where they fry some kai lan leaves till there almost look dehydrated and stir fry the stalks.

The Sea Garoupa was awesome to have. The price difference between the wild and the farmed one is RM3/100gm but whatever it was, i think the extra was worth it as the meat was firm and fresh. However at RM12/100gm, i am not sure if this is my everyday dinner dish.



I suppose we had to have crabs. The Kam Heong and the Wet Lai Yao crabs. My Hong Kong friend commented that the styles are rather different than Hong Kong. He even commented that the Lai Yao can even compete with some of the better crab dishes he had in Hong Kong. Phew, so much for my recommendation.

Overall meal cost around RM370.

Overall, the food at South Seafood is quite decent and with a wide range of seafood it tries to cater for the ordinary family meal or for celebrations. The prices maybe slightly more expensive than other places that i have been but it is really up to you if you want to pay the tiny bit extra, especially it brings back memories of when we used to get ready and leave the house at 5pm for dinner.

Verdict: 4 stars out of 5 stars. Had two great experiences here but it does require a deeper wallet to enjoy some of the more exotic seafood.

Pao Xiang Bak Kut Teh @ Pavilion, KL

Bak Kut Teh have always thrived in the areas where they are familiar i.e. Klang.

Ocassionally you have a few outlets scattered around KL and PJ that have also build a reputation too.

Rarely though would you see Bak Kut Teh in shopping centres.

Pao Xiang have done otherwise; opening in several shopping complexes like 1Utama, Centro, Klang and now Pavilion!

Famous for the fact that it is Klang Bak Kut Teh, they are also unique in using string tied to the meat during the cooking process to apparently reduce the fats on the meat. However, technically doesn't it just spill over to the soup?

The menu shows it all, all parts of the pig. Don't get too happy, prices ain't cheap.

A bowl (with refillable soup) costs around RM 13- RM17. Sea cucumber is at RM50. The soup is not as thick as i would like it and just didn't give me the oomph that Klang Bak Kut Teh usually does. Saddening to also see the omission of yao char kuey.

The atmosphere looks classy. I rather have my meals with a full crowd and boiling kettles running on gas tanks.

The million dollar question is how long will they stand tall with their porcine concoction?

Rating: 3 stars out of 5 stars. Not cheap, 5 of us raked a bill of close to RM120. Would have got us some dim sum or a couple of meals of Bak Kut Teh in Klang.

E-San Thai Kitchen @ Ara Damansara

I can't believe i am always forced to eat my own words.

Once upon a time i boasted that i don't puke from alcohol. That fairy tale ended with a bucket on New Years 2010.

I always preached that one should work smart and be organised (eventhough my workdesk is the messiest of them all) and that i have a reputation for going back no later than 5.30pm. This whole week i have been bogged down with last minute tasks and been fed humble pie, leaving office when the sky is dark. Worse still, work has somehow been on the agenda of the whole weekend.

Well, thus is life.

Anyways, a short post on a discovery in the middle of nowhere, Ara Damansara. We found ourselves in the area where roads are as confusing as a maze causing at one point driving on the wrong side of the road. Circling around, we wondered what food can we possibly get?

When we looked out from the car and saw E-San Thai Kitchen, we thought, what the heck, can't be that bad. There was a family seated down and eating joyfully and it gave us some encouragement to look at the menu.

A light dinner, we ordered a crispy fried rice and a thai green curry beef.

I seldom order fried rice in restaurants but i have no hesitation to order this again. Half the plate of rice came in a crisp form, almost like what you would get at the bottom of your claypot chicken rice. This was almost addictive-like as i could finish the whole plate (well i almost did, eventhough it was meant to be half-half with the other half).

The thai green curry beef was pretty decent. The cut of beef used tasted more like a steak and had a good bite opposed to some places where they tenderised the beef before cooking.

If there were any more stomachs, there were plenty of other dishes that we would have ordered. Not too bad of a place as we soon saw the whole restaurant fill up before we paid the bill.

Restaurant Harbour Steamboat @ Sri Petaling

When my parents said that there was a steamboat place that i got to try, just doors away from my dad's office, i was sceptical.

Firstly despite spending abit of time around the area, i had not seen a steamboat restaurant.

Secondly, my dad is kind of prone to introducing us to mediocre restaurant although he does surprise us once in awhile with a gold mine.

Thirdly, the last steamboat place he took us wasn't exactly the greatest of places.

Well fortunately you would know by now, that my dad did not disappoint but the meal exceeded all expectations.

True enough, the name does not excite, Harbour Restaurant with an orange signboard. Step inside and you can hear the boss rejecting reservations as the place is booked to the brim. Although the walls are filled to the brim with praises and comments and looked more like untasteful graffiti, it does assure you that you are well taken of.

This is the first time i have seen a restaurant charging for soup, RM30 to be exact. What you get is the pork bone soup (refillable) and it comes with 3 huge bones.

Here you don't have set menus and everything is ala-carte from the fish balls to the vegetables. All the "balls" are home made and have a good texture. The thinly sliced beef and pork have premium versions which made this a rather expensive meal if everything is premium.

You even get pork liver too which requires nothing more than 30 seconds if you want a medium cooked middle.

Throw everything to boil and cook.

While you wait for the meal to cook, theres a mixture that you can concoct to dip your meat in. A dried chilli paste, fu yu which is also some sort of fermented bean paste and cilantro. Ohh so delicious!

The bonus is that the place is air-conditioned which prevents some heavy duty sweating. While the food may not be all that cheap, the ingredients used i suppose makes up for it.

Verdict: 3.5 stars out of 5 stars. Probably deserve 4 stars if it was abit more affordable. Don't attempt to walk in because you might be getting an answer like, can, wait 2 hours. Tables for steamboat don't have a quick enough turnover time, so yes, go book and you shall be rewarded.

Robson Heights Seafood Restaurant @ Jalan Permai

I have heard about this place ever since i started blogging which i realised is in the region of years. However from the weathered looks of the restaurant, i am not surprised if it has been around for tens of years.

Despite the number of years we are talking about, it was only sometime last year that i finally on top of my head suggested to bring our neighbouring friends a.k.a Singaporeans there. Thank god they didn't disappoint, especially with their signature "Yat Chi Kuat" Pork rib. That said and done, it took me another good half year to finally get hold of a camera and re-visit them for some loving Chinese food.

Robson Heights is a very simple seafood chinese restaurant, almost no frills. Although a look at their seafood tank, you have a variety of cheap fishes to exorbitant fishes like the empurau at RM65/100gm (only upon reservation), not to mention their meaty crabs.

After a long list of fish mentioned, none that was below the threshold RM50/kg range which intrigued me, we settle for the very affordable kam foong done "cheong ching" style (RM30/kg). Essentially, chilli paste, soy bean paste, garlic, ginger and pork lard (which was sadly omitted) steamed with the fish, there was no muddy smell with the intense sauce.

The Green Dragon Vegetable which is an organic kind of vegetable was rather expensive, RM12 for a small plate.

The Sizzling Beancurd was rather homogenous. Should have ordered something else.

The whole reason we were here again, the ribs. This time, deboned which made life easier, the sweet sticky sauce and the soft succulent meat makes for a perfect formula.


The Signature Claypot Crab Rice (RM52). A huge crab was cooked with rice flavoured with shallots, abit of dark soya sauce and god knows what. A bite into the rice and you will be able to taste the sweetness of the crustacean. A wonderful delight but the huge crab failed to deliver as the meat seemed to be overcooked from the long cooking time of the rice.

Overall, a good find and i forsee myself having some family dinners over here and trying many more dishes. Although do note that if you choose to dine between the peak hours of 7-8pm, a waiting time of almost half an hour is required.

Spending New Year Eve with Jake's @ Starhill Gallery, Bukit Bintang

Last year we started the trend of renting a hotel room and doing the countdown with the TV while downing a glass of champagne. While it wasn't great and largely forgettable i.e. looking at people puke from playing Ring of Fire, this year though, my friends vowed i wouldn't go back at 1am as it would be larger, grander and "drunkier" if there was such a word.

So the venue was set, Westin Hotel with a grand 2 bedroom apartment that almost cost close to RM2k.

The alcohol was ready (later on someone else bought another bottle of vodka and 2 bottles of single malt whisky), no champagne but plenty of brut (9 bottles that are not in picture) would do (RM52 a bottle somemore). The alcohol ration was more than half a bottle of spirits and bubbly per pax, plenty to encourage alot of purging.

But first to fill up and line the stomach up.

I first heard of Jake's and their rather expensive steaks in Damansara and never really got down to trying it out because i find grilling your own steaks way more affordable and just as tasty. Well since they had an outlet in Starhill which was basically next door, the decision was made to stuff yourself with good protein as defence to alcohol.

I started off with the Oxtail Soup. The soup was decent with a chunk of oxtail thrown in for good measure. I would have loved some vegetables thrown in too but who's to argue for RM14 especially when you are in Starhill.

Alot of us knew that what comes in must come out and i think the cheaper steaks were on the orders. That still, a sirloin of 200gms cost RM77 and a 500gm porterhouse steak (with bone) sets you back for RM85. Those with a richer wallet can choose wagyu cuts that goes to RM200 plus a steak.


Whether it is sirloin or porterhouse, it is served plain with a dollop of really hot english mustard. Looks rather spartan but the meat does amazingly taste rather good.

Alternatively in their one page menu, you can also choose their other limited proteins such as the seabass which came with some sauce and a whole potato.

Overall quite tasty but it can cost quite abit to dine comfortably here. It is a case of going back to basics and the utmost attention is obviously on the meat. Although i can't see why it is so terribly expensive compared to my current place for steaks, Dish.

Verdict: 3 stars out of 5 stars. I still prefer a sauce to go with my steak and a more comfortable price tag.
