Don Don @ Swanston Street, Melbourne

I find myself eating a lot of Japanese food since coming to Australia. Maybe it is the comfort of digging into the hot sticky short grain rice or it is the easy access to the asian cuisine but going back to my archives, every page or two, i have eaten some form of rice and salmon sashimi.

A while back, there was a craving not from me about from Michelle, who by the way is the Wife's cousin, not sure if i ever mentioned that at all for the Salmon Don at Don Don. Located at the busy Swanston Street, virtually a china town on its on with lots of asian eateries along the way, the best way to spot this place is the amount of people trying to squash inside a small little shop lot and the outside tables, of course.

A tip is to decide what to eat first, rush in and order, take your food and go outside. The small open kitchen, working fast and furious can leave quite a stench on your clothes. While i have always loved the smell of curry katsu, i don't think it smells good enough as a perfume.

Serving cheap huge portions, an ideal take away for lunch or a quick bite.

A huge portion of salmon sashimi on a bed of rice, with some accompaniments. Simple and easy to replicate but the problem is finding the sashimi in the city.

While i loved the curry sauce, i prefer this with deep fried chicken or pork which they don't serve. Disappointing to say the least so if you were come to Don Don, order something different or the Salmon Don.

When i say cheap, i dont remember the prices being above AUD 10, the standard price for lunch in Australia.

Verdict: 3.5 stars out of 5 stars. Nothing out of the moon than a cheap quick bite.

Smelling like curry katsu when u return to the office after lunch is still better than smelling like booze! :D

The big portions always help. I like to leave the lunch table a happy, satiated worker. (Then an entire sleepy afternoon to bemoan my full belly, haha.)

Yeah.. the absence of deep fried cutlet just doesn't sit too well with the entire curry proposition. If you're going to stomach all that carbs anyway, may as well go the full distance with equal amount of grease!

minchow: yeah i know, if i want to sin i might as well sin all the way!

lob: yes..the afternoon to sleep it off.
