There is something about eating carbohydrates in cold weather, hot fluffy rice, drenched in whatever sauce it may be. So last week, when i met up with my sister for lunch, all i had longed for was either some hot ramen or good old rice. Being the good old Malaysian she is, when it comes to hanging out, she holes up in the two shopping centres in the Melbourne CBD. So when i asked where to eat? The only places she eats at has to be obviously housed in either QV or Melbourne Central.
Hanaichi was where we were going for lunch. That particular afternoon was terribly windy and cold and at the entrance, the girl was handling out samples of their katsu curry rice. Rich and creamy, freshly fried pork and fluffy rice grains, i was tempted but i simply had to have my comfort food, the katsudon.
This was good, maybe it was the crazy cold weather or it is the undeniably good combination of deep fried pork chop, egg, onions and the sweet soya sauce sitting on a bed of white rice. Despite serving it in a paper bowl, i had no qualms with finishing it to the last grain. Quite a value meal for students as the regular portion is only AUD 6.80.
The Chicken Teriyaki Don didn't look as pleasing as the katsudon but i am sure it was as delicious as this was emptied out pretty damn fast.
Funnily, the cheapest drink in the whole fridge at AUD 2.40 for a very decent bottled tea to complete the meal (under their own brand too).
Pretty decent food for the cold weather, but not too sure i would say the same for summer though when you probably want something lighter on the palate. One recommendation is their curry katsu rice, when i had their sample, it was quite mind blowing good.

Verdict: 3.5 stars out of 5 stars. A wholesome meal with japanese flavours for i must say an affordable price.
