Meshiya @ QV Melbourne

Back in April, i held a contest on Lots of Cravings, a guess the dish contest. Read here, if you want to jog the memory. It was an incredible meal that night at Ishin and we wanted to spread the love and i decided to buy whoever who had guessed that the dish; lunch at Ishin.

Well, lo and behold, i had a reader all the way from Melbourne who guessed it correct! Please present Sue Anne!

Although my initial budget for the lunch was RM20-25 per pax since that was the prices of the set lunch menu, i didn't get the opportunity to meet her until I moved to Melbourne. So i decided i must do what i had intended to do and honour my promise and she made an excellent suggestion to visit this humble restaurant called Meshiya that sits cozily on one of the exits of QV Melbourne.

A common sight in most restaurants in the Melbourne city is the cramp seats you get, simply because there are all really small and i suppose rent is really expensive.

Prices in Melbourne are generally more than where i used to study; Adelaide. If you want authentic Japanese food with a slight tweak to suit western tastebuds, i learnt you got to pay a slight premium. Want the really cheap japanese? You will get a bastardized version that have been made by the huge population of Chinese staying here. So where was i?

She finished her curry katsudon pretty quick so it must have been pretty good. I think the plate was AUD13-14.

Since i was going to be only eating my rice for lunch, i went straight to the Chef Bento set and man it was a huge portion for AUD 18.80. You have perfectly fried tempura, decent quality sashimi, chicken yakitori and what seems to be like a teriyaki beef. Comes with chawanmushi and miso soup. Probably my most luxurious meal so far in Melbourne.
The flavours were good, comparative to what you will get in slightly upmarket japanese restaurants back home, prices are also reflective of that. Dollar for dollar wise, where would you be able to get a bento set in Malaysia for RM18.80?

Address and contact details:

200 Lonsdale St
Melbourne, 3000

Tel:              (03) 9654 6242

Verdict: Well i haven't had enough food here yet to give you a proper rating but if this was in Malaysia, this would be bordering between 3.5 and 4 stars. Dash in for a quick bento set to fill up your stomach so you got plenty to burn during the cold winter now.
