Kansai @ NZX Ara Damansara

Remind me for those familiar with the Ara Damansara area but wasn't there a time when there was this cool hip place called Niu ZeXui 牛车水 or to be as cooler known as NZX? I remember radio ads talking about this place day and night as if it was a place for pilgrimage.

Fast forward, we were playing with the GPS and realised that it could find restaurants nearby the area i.e. Saujana where it popped up Niu Ze Xui which was 2 km away.

Well, no hesitation in finally seeing the hyped up place.

Although driving through; what seemed like low cost housing and a near desserted commercial area wasn't what i had in mind.

Almost no restaurants left, there even had a coffee place with furniture and equipment and all, just left closed. All you could find was a Full House, the place where you find decor plays a bigger part than food, Daorae, not surprised since there are literally opened everywhere and a humble looking Japanese restaurant called Kansai.

Not surprisingly they had two occupied tables on the other side on a Sunday night. Since we had to rush back home because AAM was coming to save the Wife's car battery, we "tapau'ed".

The Soft Shell Crab Salad with Ebiko and Sliced Cucumbers. Plentiful of ebiko i must say but all i tasted was fried flour rather than crab.

The Chicken Katsudon was actually not too bad.

Unagidon was rough on the edges as the eel tasted rather dry.

After putting my order down, i realised that the place was abit quiet to expect fresh sashimi. Luckily with no expectations, the serving was rather generous and decent (no stomache for me, the next day).

Prices are around RM15-25 range for a dish with rice, probably more if you order anything more exclusive. Googled the place and realised that since opening they have been running a 10% discount promotion till now!

So if you find yourself stuck in the Ara Damansara area, daring enough to drive to almost desserted town, wanting to eat Japanese food, its an option. Otherwise, Subang is 5 minute drive away and has a whole street of Japanese dining.

Address and contact:
Kansai
KG-08 Block STK, No 2, jalan PJU1A/41B
Pusat Dagangan NZX, Ara Jaya, 47301 PJ
Tel : 7883 0138

Verdict: 3 stars out of 5 stars. You pay for what you get, value japanese food. Pray the place actually stays alive.

I wanted to do a post on this place but haven't gotten the time to do it.. anyway, if you stop by there again, I highly recommend their BLACK DRAGON ROLL.. I find it to be one of the better rolls you get (even when comparing with SS15)..

what to do? The location is just not strategic... I remember using this road to get to PJ from Glenmarie during my working days with Thule.
Anyway... if u said that Kansai isn't worth returning, they must add another "a in between their name :P
u get the drift..

actually it's not bad if you consider yourself sitting there and enjoy the sashimis and sushis... the portion size indeed very generous and fresh...as in REAL HUGE... there are also quite a variety of choices which the author did not try, which i think are good and tasty as well.
I always frequent eating at this place as it's just less than one minute walk from my work place and i enjoy dining there everytime due to the ambience and the hospitality of the staffs, besides the food. i have friends who will drive all the way there just to dine with me because of the food there... thou this place is rather quiet (i will slash out the word "creepy") and i agree the commercial centre is a flop, but the food in kansai is still comparable with other jap restaurants everywhere and also in subang... come and dine with an open heart and you will get a whole different experience and challenge to your taste buds...:)

additional: it's 100% safe to go alone even for a lady (of cos not alone at night la if you are not familiar with the place)!! because the mamak restaurant opposite is open 24hours and hence not quiet at all. All around the commercial centre, you will see lots of cars parked there and the condos are just opposite and beside the commercial centre... FYI, further down the road if you are adventurous enough, you will see the luxurious residential (ARA DAMANSARA) area which is fully gated... so it's not as creepy as one thought :)

Haven't try of the sushi in Kansai.. But, the owner of Kansai owned a restaurant in Klang as well, named Osaka.. I love the sushi there! I am not sure if the prices are the same since different location.. Anyhow, I love Black Dragon and Soft Kanimaki! They are real worth! ^^
