Ming Chun Kee Seafood @ Section 17, Petaling Jaya

For once; the baton to choose the dinner venue was not in my hands. No scratching of the head, hair and dandruff was required and obviously no complaints if everything didn't turn out the way people wanted it to be. All i had to do was to take my camera and follow the car in front of me.

Finding myself in an area just opposite Jaya One, this was the other side of Section 17 Petaling Jaya (I have always associated Section 17 with the Happy Mansion area only). We were going to eat good wholesome Tai Chow food at Ming Chun Kee or as i googled later on, simply known as Ah Mooi's, the name of the Tau Kay Soh (female boss).

Situated under the old flats of the area, it is unpretentious and is down to earth (and yes, people can't wait to say, but i thought you only eat fine dining only?) with the breeze from the afternoon rain to cool you down while you dig into some of their signature dishes.

The Pork Knuckle; a gorgeous gigantic piece of heaven. Crackling skin, well flavoured lean meat, tendons and fat sitting beneath a pool of savoury gravy. Places that usually serve knuckles like to serve it with something sweet and sour to "lighten up" the dish but apparently they don't believe in that kind of nonsense. Similar to a brown gravy but more watery, however my preference would still be to dip it into something spicy, sweet and sour.

Kam Heong La La, fragant from the curry leaves and dried shrimp, unfortunately i am not too big of a fan of Kam Heong. Had a few pieces and it was cleaned up by the rest.

The Assam Kam Foong; slightly spicy and sour, a great dish to eat with rice. The plentiful lady fingers, brinjals and tomatoes were a nice addition.

After the helpers were seen carrying plate and plates of this; we couldn't resist and so it was Mantis Prawns, Salted Egg Yolk style. Crunchy and yet meaty (unlike some places where you seem to bite into flour all the time) and full of cholesterol.

The Herbal Chicken Soup (not always available) came in half a chicken swimming in soup. Didn't look appetising at first, but after the first sip, your mind would have changed. Full of herbal flavours and yet not too thick, the soup was delicious. The chicken (even the breast) was surprisingly not too tough from sitting in the soup.

A simple stir fry Spinach. This was almost a compulsory dish especially looking at all the protein and fat dishes we had.

Address and contact details:
The old flats of Jalan 17/1A
Section 17 Petaling Jaya

Verdict: 3.5 stars out of 5 stars. While writing this, i see rain pouring outside my window, oh how i wish i had a bowl of herbal soup and a chicken breast to warm up the expanding belly. A value for money tai chow place with above average choices and quality dishes. The meal came up to RM 105 for 5 pax.

The Pork Knuckle is huge. This is the first time I have seen such presented this way. Looks like its slit open and spread out for roasting or for eating. Definitely a must go.
