Checkers @ Damansara Heights

Seriously hidden in the middle of nowhere, virtually out of sight to the mass public and serving only exclusive 10 tables of guests at a go, Checkers is one of those rare restaurants, happy to serve the neighbourhood and no more.

Having enough of fighting with crowds at shopping malls, it was time to dine in peace, so Checkers it was.

Apparently, there have a reputation of always being fully booked so i came prepared with a reservation in hand. Walking into the restaurant without a signboard, you are greeted by (i presume the owner) a casually dressd uncle (t shirts and shorts) and seated in those foldable uncushioned metal chairs. Nevermind, if anything i was comforted that worse case scenario, i would only be dining with another 20-30 people, quiet and exclusive for me.

If anything, i think i would be the noisiest.

Starting off with grilled mushrooms, i had in mind button mushrooms, but shitake was used (i think). Being used to this kind of mushrooms soaked with a thick broth/gravy, it was kind of weird having to eat a grilled version. Quite tasty with garlic bits, but i think i prefer mine soaked with flavour.

Grilled Squid with a tangy BBQ sauce.

A recommendation; a starter pizza with bacon and mushroom, appetising and getting us all ready for the mains.

Firstly the Pork Knuckles, with the perfect signs, crunchy skin and succulent meat. Served with sauerkraut and mash potatoes, share it or indulge it all on your own. Yumm, the sauce on the other hand was a sourish watery one, i would have prefered a brown sauce though. Otherwise eat it on its own!

Fresh Scampi (in this case HUGE prawns) served with bread. A tomato broth with melted cheese, the prawns were fresh and had a good bite to it. The only problem is the really long waiting time and the exorbitant price of RM 72.

The Mix Pork Platter, chop and sausage. The mixed beans salad was interesting, with a piece of grilled avocado. The pork chop was so tender and almost melted in the mouth.

With an itchy mouth, we longed for more, and so more we ordered.

With a doubtful look on the face, the order was taken and served.

The full glory LOTR ("Lord of the Ribs"). A whole rack of pork ribs. Felt abit dried with a bit of sauce sparsely brushed on, the meat was still quite tender. RM 88, this was a steal with the huge portion whilst tastewise, some people may prefer the smokey and saucier kind.

With almost a bursting stomach, their rum laced or doused desserts were still a must.

An innocent looking cendol, had scoops of rum flavoured vanilla ice cream. This was refreshing and slightly intoxicating.

The alcohol flavoured chocolate cake was normal, not molten and was a plain one. More ice cream completed the dish but was quite disappointing, might just stick with the cendol.

Address and contact details:
19, Lorong Setia Bistari 2,
Damansara Heights, 50490 Kuala Lumpur
Tel: +603-2095 3304
Operating Hours: 6pm-10pm, close on Monday

Verdict: 4 stars out of 5 stars. Call me biased, but nothing beats a small cozy restaurant with good food, non halal for that matter as well. The prices are quite expensive, RM297 for the whole meal. Then again, something hidden from the whole world, is a gem.

Sinful.
Btw, somehow I feel the pix in this post look different from your usual in angle and texture/colour. On purpose? Or maybe just my drowsy eyes.

OMG, I *LOVE* this place. I remember my first evening there so fondly, finger licking, LOLs aplenty, gut hanging out... pleasure in a nutshell! This place seems only genuinely interested in serving up good nosh, not to win any popularity contests.

The LOTR look so dry from the photo :(

The food were mostly good, the cons would be there's no normal chilli sauce available... We asked for it and was given a type of unfamiliar hot sauce instead (spicier than Tabasco but thicker).

Hi Joe,

You should try their duck and their eggplant starter..

Their desert - drowning ice-cream (if I dun remember wrongly) is superbly good (ice-cream with rum!)

They usually have special turkey for Christmas, but of course you have to book very early on.

And..yes, the "uncle" is the owner. He used to do some "magic tricks" for us.. haha!

I love love this place!
