Infamous Char Kuey Teow @ Lorong Selamat

A case of reputation exceeding expectations? Or was it a case of expectations superceding reality? Maybe just a case of denial and not realising that life is never as good as our expectation and reputation of oneself?

In any case this was somewhat the thoughts that ran through, when i had my first sniff of the infamous Lorong Selamat Char Kuey Teow.

The last time having queued ages, and taking the hot sun in stride as we dug into the hot and delish plate of noodles.

This time around? Situated inside the Heng Huat coffeeshop, there is a helper to take your orders!

Price to pay? RM 6 for a standard plate and RM 8 for the bigger portionl; hardly a dent to some people's wallet when they pay more then RM 10 to eat in an air-conditioned mall.

Tastewise, it just fell flat of everything; reputation and expectation. Oily, with no signs of waxed sausages and pork lard, it wasn't even worth ordering a second plate.

Worse still was my friend who went 2 hours earlier then me, said it was one of the best he ever had, goes to show what luck.

Despite lacking flavour, it still look darn good on picture.

While waiting for the noodles to be fried, which was damn long eventhough the place wasn't packed, we ordered ais kacang. Refreshing to say the least.

Another failure? My friend had this as well 2 hours earlier then me, and said it was a bomb, mine was just well, not creamy enough and soaked with steam water.

Lesson learnt, never come here at 3pm, or just go to where the locals go.

What a bummer, the char kuey teow wasn't just up to par.

Location: Lorong Selamat, Penang

It's either your friend has been extremely hungry that everything taste so darn delish or it's really bad already, since the stall's been upgraded to a shop which is usually the case.

It's definitely far far away from famous ler...this place is like a no-no for most locals, only tourists come here these days.
I agree that your friend must be really starving when he was there because seriously, this place is like all the way down the level of a decent CKT.....sighs, overrated in reputation but yet underrated in taste:(

Don't go to those famous places, next time inform all the Penang floggers, they will guide you....safe and sound;)

I always tell my frens who r fr outstation never patronize the Lrg Selamant stall as i have never seen any hawker as arrogant n rude n Obnoxious as the ckt seller

also, its seriously overrated n overprice....we should ask the Consumer affairs ministry folks to come n take a look

actually, IMHO, all of penang is overrated when it comes to hawker food...i honestly dun see the big deal. this one seems overrated and overpriced.

Sad to hear your review on the ckt. We locals seldom eat at this stall. Its expensive and not tasty.
You can always give us, Penang bloggers a call for nice and yummy food around town :)

Lrg Selamat kind of lost its charm and sold its soul on the altar of commercialism. The last I was there was 4 years ago. Still the urge to visit is there. I am kind of a sucker for old fashion nostalgic food locations despite the heat, humidity, long lines and the price.

wahliow...yummy food here ler.....oo la la...check out my recent buffet pics....see yeah

nah this CKT has been struck off the list of "must eat when i balik kampung" eons ago.

it's real crap having to put up with people who think that you owe them a living, only to be dished bad, expensive food (like a certain madam with a last name K).

my fav CKT in penang remains the kopitiam in Air Itam near the clock tower that uses duck eggs (the penang mamak mee goreng and mee rebus is a killer too!)...

"Joe" who is constantly craving said...

leo: waitin for u to tour guide me then haha..

vialentino: have fun drooling here!

"Joe" who is constantly craving said...

worldwindows: thats the problem..its too famous..and we basically got too excited when we found that lorong!

seaqueen: have to wait till nxt time =(

i don't really like going there for CKT but tried it nevertheless and found it decent.. but was there early-ish in the morning so I guess the essentials were still in stock. oh well, tough luck.

daphne said...
