Greyhound Cafe @ Emporium, Bangkok

Enough of "emo" moments with my Bangkok trip and lets get down to serious business. After all, thats what my blog is all about right?


Greyhound Cafe rang a bell when i chanced upon it while walking in each of the numerous shopping centres that Bangkok has to offer.

The cool and chilled out decor, bustling traffic in and out of the entrance, their brand of clothing next door gives you a feel of our local "Delicious".

Walking in, we were soaking into the life of the upmarket Thais. Locals that could afford a cup of coffee that costs 90 baht as opposed to 9 baht, a meal that costs 300 baht instead of 30 baht. It was after all, one of the objectives to go to Bangkok; enjoy what the locals do, whether rich or poor.

When we first looked into the menu, stress accumulated. The menu is essentially half european and half asian cuisine. With western cuisine so commonly available in Malaysia, we concentrated hard on the local half, which was not to say totally local. Serving fusion food, we were contemplating whether this is really the place to eat some "Thai food" or just soak in the atmosphere only.

Well here goes.
Essentially franchised all over Bangkok and started from a clothing line, the wall just shouted "I am cool, come in here!". No wonder i had to wait 10 minutes for a table.

I remember the juice being sweet, mint, pineapple and something else that made it green. Otherwise, refreshing as it can get from the inhuman humid weather.

Thai Anchovy spaghetti. Looking like your normal tomato based pasta, this was "asianised" with salty anchovies and dried chilli whole pieces. Something that i have never tried before, not even close, the chilli and salty sensation kept me digging at the plate.

I was first served this. Mint leaves and a light sweet chilli dressing. Hmm, dip it in and chew like a cow?

Haha, the cow has arrived. The healthy beef salad drizzled in the dressing and flavoured with extra mint leaves, was healthy and wholesome. The red centre proved that beef is eaten properly in this region too.

The dish oozes the word "home-cooking". Simple rice and salted egg, served with fried local fish with vegetable fritters and accomodated with their HOT HOT fish and shrimp paste. The paste was simply magical although numbing and robust in flavour. Definitely not for the faint hearted.

Overall the flavours were good and it was fun to see how the locals were dropping in for lunch, speaking in a language that we can only reply with a smile. Thankfully the waiters were speaking English and ordering was a blessing in disguise. With the experience of eating what upmarket Thais eat, what do the normal Thais on the street eat? err...i think sorta same, sans the ambiance and western ingredients like pasta.

I think the mint leaves were probably less of an appetizer and more of a mouth cleanser... I'd love that in every restaurant here... very refreshing to munch on it... if one doesn't mind looking like a kambing in a high-end eatery, hehe.

Anchovies spaghetti is so new to me. But will the spaghetti sauce cover the taste of the spaghetti?

kok: haha essentially the pasta is to soak up the sauce mah..so no cover haha..anywayz the tomato base is not the main flavour..it is the salty anchovies..
