Tony Roma's @ The Gardens

Remember when i said i wished to conquer the eateries in Midvalley, Gardens? Well this is another one striked off my hunting list.

Tony Roma's.

If anything that convinced me to try; is the ocean of mixed reviews about this place. People saying that this is "ooh so much better then TGIF and Chillis", then "but...they are famous for their baby back pork ribs! but they dont serve PORK HERE !!", and so on and so forth.

Guess its time for me to give it a try then, shall we? Sigh, pork or no pork, i am trying.

Now, for some reason, a bread roll was given, no cutting done for you, served with solid rock garlic butter that clearly felt like it was just taken out of the fridge. Maybe we are meant to go back to basics and start ripping the bread into pieces, or before you speak, the Mom starts cutting it into delicate pieces for all of us.

The half onion loaf was given complimentary with every 2 mains ordered. A promotion among the eateries at the moment. This killer appetizer is heavy on flavour especially dipping it in the "taste like thousand island sauce, looks like thousand island sauce but it is their BBQ sauce". Beware of the calories, a full loaf, can carry calories enough for the whole day!

Mom had the Asian Chicken Salad, with a sweet and tangy sauce, generous pieces of chicken breasts that were not tough (maybe its because i always cook my chicken breasts real tough for a reason). To be honest, i thought the leaves look sad and miserable although the taste was rather palatable.

The Pacific Cod was hiding behind the brocolli from the Garlic Scampi Butter. What appears to sound like a perfect dip for fish, turned out to be diluted melted butter. One more qualm, when did butterfish get a new name like Pacific Cod? One thing is for sure, whether eaten raw or grilled, the creamy texture is evident and the fishy aftertaste too.

I am strongly against people eating steak in no other style other then medium rare or medium at worse. The Sister being the opposite of me, chose to cook it right through, turning red meat into brown meat. I cant take this anymore.

Getting ready for the finale, from top left, Smoky BBQ, Honey BBQ, Original BBQ and Hot BBQ. Verdict? There are all BBQ sauces with the mildest of difference. The Smoky BBQ had a deeper flavour while the Hot had a spicy tinge to it.

The finale, the Beef Bountiful Ribs. Meat basically falling off the bone, 5 huge pieces of it all. The meat was succulent but at the same time, wondering what if a "babi" was used instead of the "lembu". Basted in none other then BBQ sauce, i think it was an over kill when i tried the 4 sauces above. The verdict? The meat is good and it is still worth trying.

Address details:

Tony Roma's The Gardens
Lot LG 217, Mid Valley city

Verdict: 3.5 stars out of 5 stars. There was no qualms with service, although the oddball waiter comes once in awhile to ask if everything is alright. I have always wondered what if it was not alright, wonder how they would react? The food came on time and the ribs stand out as the rest is your usual American western affair available at other competitors.

I laughed so hard at this I nearly choked. People in the gym are staring at me funny. (I so need to stop reading blogs in public areas...)

The jacket potato with the steak looked to me as microwaved. We have this a lot over here and if you pay for it in a restaurant, you'd expect it to be baked in an oven. Apart from that, food dont look too bad to me.

"Joe" who is constantly craving said...

fbb: hahah baking with her la! what else were you thinking about??

hazza: well american franchise..what can i say? didnt try the potato though..cant tell

if appearances are anything to go by, i dun think i'll be giving this place a go. onion loaf looks soggy, pacific cod doesn't seem a sustainable portion, and, really, where is the fun if they dun serve their specialty pork ribs? *pouts*

the babi ribs @ Tony Roma's is a MUST try. Take a bus down to Sg and come back on the same day if you have to.

Or take a drive down, on a weekend (no Tolls ma on the island), and stay one night also worth it...

Again, the babi's a must try....

The 'verdict' between Tony Roma's and Nihon Kai only differ half a * (star) But ... if I re-read both articles, there should be a bigger gap. Anyway, great weblog, sad thing : I'll probably never taste the great food, as I live in Europe. Love the pics and descriptions though. Good stuff. Keep it up!

"Joe" who is constantly craving said...

bernsy: hahah ok ok..i think i definitely get the point..

j2fkm: here sell beef ribs..haha but other places sell pork ribs..
