Shih Lin Taiwan Snacks @ Gardens, MidValley

Street food originating from Taiwan.

3 essential items; Oysters, Mee Sua and Fried Chicken.

Enjoying under the blowing air-con with no sweat, clean chairs and tables instead of tarmac to stand on and obviously no sights of rats and flies. Definitely another new meaning to "Street Food".

Apparently a big hoo haa down town in Singapore, creating long queues of eager people wanting to down big juicy oysters and mee sua in a thick almost gelatine like broth.

Although i still have doubts over the palates of the down under when it comes to street hawker food, i still need to give this a try right?

Apparently, i might be proven wrong. Equipped with two large oysters and shredded chicken, the mee sua and the broth was on the bland side. Spot that chilli paste down there? The sourish lime juice used with it, made the bowl delicious and easy to down. It is amazing how a bit of lime can do wonders, just like it can do to a simple Maggi Goreng.

It is a pity, RM 6 only gets you two oysters because i want more. Some say to enjoy the Ultimate experience, no chopsticks shall be used, only the spoon which seemed hard but achievable.

With two favourite ingredients downed, what was next?

Who can say no to deep fried chicken? Juicy, breaded and crispy; it almost sounds like a KFC ad. The only qualm i had was the refusal to cut the chicken to "maintain the crispy skin and the juicy meat" it seems. I can forsee that if i ever had to satisfy myself with oily fried food with the guilty need for protein; XXL Crispy Chicken seemed to be the best bet.

Just bear in mind, i am pretty immune to thick breaded batter.

Address:

Along the new lower ground walkway from The Gardens to the old wing of Mid Valley

Verdict: 3 stars out of 5 stars. At RM6 for each dish, i can actually get decent food without having to sweat but i am pretty bias because i am pretty "in" with oysters, mee sua and fried chicken.

Spot a trend in my eating patterns? Gardens, i aim to finish all of the food you offer, just you wait.

yesss sirrr, there are countless shihlin stalls here on this island...a hit with the young crowd, i reckon. love nothing else but the chicken...the chili powder and the unidentified flavouring powder give it the oomph!

In the streets thronged with stalls of goodies...is a small little shop. There's no tables, just benches in what they call a "shop" which is just as wide as a hallway. You go up to the guy and ask for one oyster mee sua and plop plop plop...he'll pass you a styrafoam bowl and you'll have to squeeze into whatever spot you can find among those benches and start slurping...yeah, they give you a spoon only.

Tat's the oyster mee sua I ate in Shih Lin Night Market in Taipei. Bloody scalding hot and they like to add in vinegar into the soup. Very tasty...but then, the one in Taipei is without those fat juicy oyster shown...

Sigh..once again Joe makes me hungry!!!! How am I supposed to lose weight when I'm constantly hungry???

"Joe" who is constantly craving said...

nic: looks like alot of other ppl r tolerant to fried thick breaded chicken haha..

ling239: yes now that you remind me..n the price isnt too far off..pasar malam also charge RM4-5

mh: yes..they could definitely do with some vinegar instead of lime..didnt see that option though..what no oysters?how can? well maybe i should do another blog, crave for exercise!

Wah, Joe, your standards very high lah. That bowl of mee sua looks pretty good from where I am. Hot, piping goodness!

But bro, what about the conversation we had about working out? How to work out like this, if you are going to finish all the food Gardens has to offer? Lol.

oooh, i love putting oysters in noodles. you so must go lemon garden, or any buffet that serves oysters, and chuck copious amounts in the noodle soup. goes very well with the curry mee in lemon garden. talk about your ultimate luxury curry mee. i only just walked through that passage two days ago for the first time.

"Joe" who is constantly craving said...

sc: haha can do it mid valley wat..no ned to go so far..or is that an excuse?

fbb: wahahaha..ok la..i shall try ordering the long awaited cake soon.. oysters and noodles..shiat..i need the shangs card lar..wtf

I tried this before. Wasn't too impressed with the mee sua as it was ladden with salt!

Yummy. I love the yummy oyster noodles. Something totally different from what we normally get. As for the deep fried chicken it's alright but there's this really good similar fried chicken with all the chilli powder and everything that's sold at Tmn Desa pasar malam. I'm a sucker for it. Travel all the way to get it most Fridays after work.

"Joe" who is constantly craving said...

daphne: mine was seemingly lacking salt..

seaqueen: i know wat u mean with the fried chicken..haha so m i..

Hazza said...

all looks great to me! Was it enough though? Was the bowl small or was the spoon rahter big?

Tummythoz said...

Somehow I kept forgetting this chain. Then again not really a fan of oysters in noodles.

"Joe" who is constantly craving said...

hazza: the bowl isnt exactly very big haha..with the chicken its more then enough!

tummythoz: well once it spreads like wild fire..you will be reminded day after day when u visit the shopping malls

Jason said...

With the spoon as comparison... the serving looked small. But anyway, me not oyster fan. Maybe can go for other stuff :)

tigerfish said...

Hahha....you know...I actually don't like them....I mean Oysters + mee sua. Yes...it's their favorite but not my liking. As for fried chicken, I have not even tried it here! I prefer the spicy malay turmeric fried chicken wings! heeeee haw...

We had the best mee sua we've ever tasted in Taiwan, and we stood on the streets eating with spoon. Yeah, like you said, it was difficult eating with spoon but it was fun! Got a little messy! Maybe we should try this place out!

w&e: wow..isit?? must be cool..

Jun said...

hmm... 3aud isn't as bad if u dun convert, so altho i know i'm deceiving myself, i wudn't mind paying 3aud as compared to rm10, if u know wat i mean..
