Guan Kie @ Gohtong Jaya

I am sure by now, everyone must be thinking, where is that post that this fellow was talking about..the post about going all the way to Gohtong Jaya just to eat..bear in mind a journey there and back will cost u a 100km worth of petrol..and 10 bucks in toll..and just when i thought my quest for good food will never end..it stopped halfway up the hill of Genting..

We often patronise this place whenever we have the itch for "Far Yuk"..which is similar to caramelized bacon..and also they serve pretty cheap seafood to say the least..but why oh why..did they had to disappoint me??..It striked me when the newspaper was asking for bloggers to be more responsible..it actually applies to us as well..when i say that the restaurant is not on par..this will be read by my 100 odd visitors..and then the word spreads..chances are the restaurant has not only lost this customer..but a couple hundred more of walk-in customers..so i will try my best to pinpoint some good and bad points and i also would like the floggers to do the same too..

It seems that the original chef aka the owner of the place has not been feeling well..and she has left things to another chef that she employed..some items remain the same..whereas some of her specialities , there is still some way to go..

Starting off with a rather fierce looking fish, Soon Hock (RM110 a kg)..Firm flesh just the way its meant to be..nicely steamed..the soya sauce was just nice..not too salty..

Another favourite...Steam frogs with Brands Chicken Essence..essentially a simple item that should not be a problem for some of the veteran home chefs..Nicely done once again...very firm..and the chicken essence was just so tempting, we finished all the sauce..! The problems started below..

Normal stir fry veges..until my mom bite into the leaves to discover salt sticking to it..hmm this is not good..

Our favourite "Fa Yuk"...We normally order 2 plates..let you imagine how good it used to be..The colour is significantly lighter and it was just not i guess sweet enough..not crunchy enough..and that prompted us to ask if there was a change in chefs..i guess they couldnt hide it from our tongues..

Because we didnt know they changed chef..greedy us ordered another noodle dish which is basically the same style served with sang mee..the noodles were very soft..should have suggested they deep fry it cantonese style..The waitress was shocked that we were so greedy to call two plates of virtually the same thing..kept asking us again and again..and we say yes..we want one plate..and another one with noodles..omg..gluttons..

So..some hit and misses..unless the lady boss goes back and rule the kitchen..it is very lightly we need to move around the expanding row of shoplots for more sumptious food..hope she gets well soon..normally a meal here is a definite satisfying 8 out of 10..but today they scored rather badly at a lowly 6.5 out of 10..but like i said..be responsible for what you say..so that being said..go ahead and try this out..but try the positive dishes..

theres a restaurant down the road called Qui lin (i hope i got the spelling right), The "Ham yu Fa Lam Pou (sliced bacon cooked with salted fish in claypot)" is awsome. Should try it some time, if you like "Ikua (have no idea wat it is caled in english)" there a Ikua version of this which is awsome too, and also the calamari cooked with salted egg yoke and also erm... there still alot of nice dishes but i think i'll stop here. happy exploring :)

Aiks..didn't read this blog when I went up to genting with my family a few weeks ago before I start work. Was calling everyone to ask for suggestion, coz we brought along the grand lady (my granny) and she's very picky on food (sorry..i mean she prefer fine food..). Thank god the tried and tested strategy works..we opt for the restaurant with most customers and it happened to be Guan Kie.

As usual, my family is equally greedy..haha..we ordered the catfish thingy and also soon hock..but obviously the latter just bowled us over. absolutely fresh ...perfectly steamed. But the rest of the dishes were of so-so standard only.
